Kodi download – the open source media center

Kodi – formerly called XBMC – is an extensive, free and open source media center. In addition to a media player that can handle many different file and streaming formats, Kodi also includes a streaming server and client as well as recorder functions for recording live TV, add-ons and many other features available by a Kodi download.

Using Kodi – advantages of Kodi

  • Free to use
  • Available on nearly every OS
  • Highly customizable
  • Active community
  • Large amount of add-ons
  • No complete overview of all add-ons available
The software is a media player that is usually operated on a television and controlled by a remote control. Kodi can read metadata from local media files and store them in the own database. The metadata are visually appealing and the media files can be played from the context of media management. In contrast to pure (hardware) media players, Kodi uses additional content from the internet to offer the user added value to the classic pure playback functionality: The program can call up movie posters, actor lists, subtitles and trailers, among other things. The basis for this is the expandability of Kodi download by means of downloadable plugins provided by third party vendors. Internet video portals such as YouTube, Hulu or Veoh, for example, as well as nearly all media libraries can be accessed via Kodi. The integration of video-on-demand services is also possible with additional plug-ins.

Media player, streaming and more on (almost) all platforms

Kodi can handle all common media formats. Whether music, videos, streams, images or GIF animations – Kodi displays and plays them all. The players are complemented by subtitles, equalizers and audio visualization features, while photos and images can be displayed in extensively filterable slide shows. The program itself has of course not included any media but it offers extensive functions to supplement your own collection with freely available information, tags, cover art and more. For example, using a Kodi download you can integrate posters and graphic banners for your own digitized series collection or refine imported films with trailers, film posters, video extras and much more.

individualize your Kodi download

In addition, the Media Center can be extensively individualized with add-ons and skins thanks to the source openness. In the add-ons category on the manufacturer’s site you will find a selection of graphics themes that you can use to customize the look of Kodi to your own taste. Altogether there are over 700 add-ons from different areas – besides skins there are additional sources for free video, audio or picture media, screen savers, weather, games and service apps as well as collections of song lyrics, metadata, subtitles and the like. Once Kodi download is set up as a media center, it can also be controlled using a variety of remote controls. A list of supported hardware – including Playstation or XBox gamepads by the way – can be found on the manufacturer’s website besides the Kodi download. A remote control app for iOS and Android devices is also available for free Kodi download.

Conclusion

Equipment

Kodi is mentioned and designed to be hooked up to a TV or a large monitor, but there’s nothing to stop you from running it on a laptop or just about any other device – it’s available for many, many platforms. That said, some platforms will have an easier time running the software than others.

For instance, iPhone and iPad users need to make sure their device is jailbroken, while Android users need to be running Android 5.0 or higher. Both these mobile operating systems give users the option of downloading Kodi either through the App Store or Google Play, as well as the official Kodi site.

Most users have their Kodi running on a special box like an raspberry pi. This device can easily be set up and get customized for all your needs.

Design

By default, Kodi runs in full-screen mode – an indication that it’s designed to be used on a dedicated box. It is recommended to use Kodi with a remote, which makes it very easy to handle. You can either use one of your basic remotes or even use your smartphone as a controller.

Once you’re used to how things work (and it’s much better if you’re using a remote rather than a keyboard and mouse), you’re in business and ready to start streaming media to devices all around your home.

Customization

The software really starts getting fun when you jump into the huge world of add-ons. There’s a massive collection of extensions that extend its capabilities by adding support for extra services such as streaming sites, games, lyrics, subtitles, and just about anything else you could possibly want.

The sheer number of add-ons can be overwhelming, and it may take you a while to find the best ones to enhance your experience. But it shouldn’t take too long to get used to how things work, and it’s worth the effort.

It’s certainly well worth investigating the many plugins that give the software’s interface a new look. From Spotify to YouTube and virtually everything in between, you can take advantage of hundreds of free add-ons to help give your Kodi service more versatility.

Support

As mentioned before Kodi has a really active userbase and there is already a solution for nearly every problem imaginable. Once you get used to the numerous add-on possibilities for Kodi you will find solutions for all your needs.
The best idea when facing issues is to visit their official kodi forum where users help each other. The FAQ and Bug Tracker offer support for all common questions and bugs.
However the miss of a live support does make it only 4.5 of 5 stars!
